What is “Managed Print Services”?

Why is managed print services important?

Upstream, as you’ll be aware by now, is a managed print services company and we have been for a few decades now.  Lots of other companies have joined us, creating a burgeoning managed print solutions market.  The problem is many people don’t know what managed print solutions are and there are a number of different offerings on the market that all have different interpretations.

For us, it’s about creating a print environment that matches the business need and adds value to processes and systems within the organisation.

The magic comes in the solutions that help integrate printers and copiers into the business systems.  Automated forms, barcoding, scanning, OCR etc. are all print based solutions that streamline processes.

That’s a lot more than simply outsourcing responsibility for service and toner.  And the great thing is that you can get all this additional value for reduced cost, reduced management headache and reduced carbon footprint with managed print services.

Printers – don’t just ignore them

We had a team offsite this week where we discussed lots of things related to the managed print industry and spent some time looking at where the industry is going. I thought one point that was made was quite interesting – that printing is not a ‘put it in and leave it’ technology.

This must go counter to many people’s view of printers; that they should sit in the corner and simply work when called upon. But we talk a lot about providing the right printing solutions for a specific business need and the fact is that businesses change all the time.

Growth, downsizing, acquisition, geographic expansion, new services, new markets, changing processes, new technology and more all affect how a business’s printer environment is used and managed. As such it makes sense that it should be audited on a regular basis to make sure it remains optimised to do the job you need it to, costs are under control and the environmental impact is minimised.

Of course if your printer environment isn’t managed then the constant demands of more toner, paper and servicing will have office managers agreeing that the printer is not something you can just leave alone. (And obviously we’d encourage you to give us a call and discuss how much money and hassle we can save you.. <forgive the plug>)
